Hope (Maria Sødahl, 2019, Norway, 130 minutes)

Loosely based on writer/director Maria Sødahl's own experience, Hope finds a successful middle-aged woman, Anja (Andrea Bræin Hovig), replete with increasingly distant husband Tomas (international star Stellan Skarsgård) and rapidly growing children, getting a surprise diagnosis of terminal cancer. As the family has grown more sprawling and distant from one another, this diagnosis forces a new approach to their personal relationships. Hope was Norway's submission to the Academy for consideration for the 93rd Academy Awards, where it made it to the shortlist for Best International Feature.
